The Witcher is a game in which you are a bountyhunter of a sort that hunts monsters (and sometimes bandits) to make a living. You are skilled with two types of sword: a silver sword and a 'normal' sword. Furthermore you have access to a variety of magical spells (though they are not called spells in the game).
I personally liked the way of battle, which actually requires tactics, because unlike in several other games the main thing that happens, is that both you and the monsters get stronger, but the concept hardly changes. That is less the case with 'The Witcher', because you just have one character, and thus requires more tactics, including alchemy (making and using certain potions) and deciding which magic you will use.
It is the kind of roleplaying game that i prefer most: the type in which a lot of things you do right now, directly or indirectly affect the future. And some characters that you can choose to fight or not, may turn up later in the game if you had chosen not to fight/kill them.
